It's as simple as that, really. |

✏️ In [yesterday's issue](https://postgresweekly.com/issues/475) we said we'd drop an extra 'newsflash' email if Postgres 15 was actually released this week and.. [it was!](https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/postgresql-15-released-2526/) Back to normal service next Wednesday :-)

[Postgres 15 Released](https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/postgresql-15-released-2526/)

Since Postgres 9.6 back in 2016, [each new major release](https://www.postgresql.org/support/versioning/) of Postgres has arrived in late September or early October, and now Postgres 15 (Postgres's _32nd_ major release overall) is with us after the usual round of beta and RC releases.

In coming weeks, _Postgres Weekly_ will continue to feature blog posts about what's changed, performance benchmarks, and similar developments, but for now, what's new?

- [SQL `MERGE`](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/15/sql-merge.html) – a long time coming – for conditionally modifying, inserting or deleting rows in a single statement.
- LZ4 and Zstandard (zstd) compression fupport for WAL files.
- Server-side compression of backups using gzip, LZ4 or zstd with `pg_basebackup`.
- New [regular expression functions](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/15/functions-matching.html#FUNCTIONS-POSIX-REGEXP) for inspecting strings including `regexp_count` and `regexp_like`.
- 'Security invoker' views can query data using the permissions of the _caller_ of the view rather than the _creator_ of the view – a key data security feature.
- A new `jsonlog` logging format which, unsurprisingly, logs using a defined JSON structure.
- A new [`pg_walinspect` extension](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/15/pgwalinspect.html) opens the possiblity to query write-ahead logs through SQL rather than separate tooling.
- [Faster sort performance overall.](https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/azure-database-for-postgresql/speeding-up-sort-performance-in-postgres-15/ba-p/3396953)
- Users can now be granted permission to alter certain server-level config params.
- Improved logical replication features.

Of course, _there's more_ and for that you'll want to check out the [official release notes](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/15/release-15.html) as they provide the most exhaustive guide to changes and new features.
