🎂 [PostgreSQL 14 Released](https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/postgresql-14-released-2318/) — Just over a year from the final release of [Postgres 13](https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/postgresql-13-released-2077/), the next major release is here. Like with 13, 14 is what you could call an ‘evolutionary’ release with no _huge_ new features (it's all about [the little things](https://blog.crunchydata.com/blog/postgres-14-its-the-little-things)), but a laundry list of enhancements and a sense of maturity. These things include:

- Ability to more easily assign read or write-only privileges to users on tables, views, and schemas.
- [Logical replication improvements](http://amitkapila16.blogspot.com/2021/09/logical-replication-improvements-in.html).
- [Better range types](https://blog.crunchydata.com/blog/better-range-types-in-postgres-14-turning-100-lines-of-sql-into-3).
- Improvements to query parallelism support and improved parallel sequential scan performance.
- [Reduced index bloat](https://www.cybertec-postgresql.com/en/index-bloat-reduced-in-postgresql-v14/).
- [Some JSON improvements](https://blog.crunchydata.com/blog/better-json-in-postgres-with-postgresql-14).
- Per-column [configurable compression](https://paquier.xyz/postgresql-2/postgres-14-table-compression/).
- Stored procedures can now return data using [`OUT` parameters](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/14/sql-createprocedure.html).

[CYBERTEC Migrator Version 3 Out Now](https://www.cybertec-postgresql.com/en/products/cybertec-migrator/) — We've rebuilt the GUI to simplify database migrations even further: Four simple stages now guide you through the migration process and control features help to rerun a stage or abort. You can now explore the inner workings of a migration with the new log view.

[Timescale Cloud: A New Postgres-Based Cloud Database Service for Time-Series Workloads](https://blog.timescale.com/blog/announcing-the-new-timescale-cloud-and-a-new-vision-for-the-future-of-database-services-in-the-cloud/) — Postgres continues its path to dominating the cloud database scene with a new offering from Timescale and their open source, time-series database extended [TimescaleDB](https://github.com/timescale/timescaledb) Postgres variant. This release post goes into a _lot_ of depth as to why they think it’s a compelling offer, and they encourage you to try it out for free.

[How Azure Shipped Postgres 14 Within One Day of its Release](https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/azure-database-for-postgresql/how-we-shipped-postgresql-14-on-azure-within-one-day-of-its/ba-p/2801300) — If you think upgrading your Postgres install is hard, it might boggle the mind thinking about how cloud providers upgrade entire platforms. Microsoft are proud to have begun this process within 24 hours of release, and while this post doesn’t go into a lot of detail about it, it’s a good look at how they think about it and how they keep Citus involved.

[Three Ways to Auto-Increment with Postgres](https://mydbanotebook.org/post/auto-increment/) — The author looks at sequences, the `SERIAL` data type, and the identity column, which overlap in various ways.

[PostgreSQL 14 on Kubernetes (With Examples)](https://blog.crunchydata.com/blog/postgresql-14-on-kubernetes) — Crunchy Data has rolled out their own flavored Postgres 14 experience to [PGO](https://github.com/CrunchyData/postgres-operator), the open source Postgres Operator for Kubernetes.

[Upgrading from Postgres 9.6 to Postgres 13](https://www.migops.com/blog/2021/09/29/upgrading-postgresql-9-6-to-postgresql-13/) — Before you worry about upgrading to Postgres 14, maybe getting off of an older version like 9.6 is a bigger concern. Postgres 9.6, which came out five years ago now, is officially at its ‘end of life’ from November 2021.

[Postgres is Still a 'Teenager'?](https://www.instaclustr.com/postgresql-14/) — The author tried to find a focal point for what Postgres 14 is all about before realizing.. there isn’t one, and it’s more about a roster of smaller but solid enhancements.

[Why Are Relational DBs The Standard Instead of Graph-Based DBs?](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28736405) — Not Postgres-specific, but this question led to some interesting comments on Hacker News this week with the argument spanning all the way back to the 70s.
